NEW YORK — The 36-year-old manager of a homeless shelter was abducted by a former shelter resident, forced to undress in a car and then shot on the street while she fled her abductor, the New York Times reports.

Ana Charle, 36, was the director of Project Renewal, a Bronx homeless shelter. The New York Times reports that Charle, a mother of two, had left the facility and was walking to her car Tuesday night when a 39-year-old former resident of the shelter allegedly forced her into his vehicle. The man, identified as West Spruill, then allegedly forced her to undress in the car.

At some point, a naked Charle managed to escape the car and run down the street. The Times reports that Spruill caught up with her and shot her multiple times in the head and chest. Charle was taken to Montefiore Medical Center in New York where she was pronounced dead.

Police arrested Spruill a short time later on suspicion of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Other employees of the homeless shelter told the Times that Spruill was a client who seemed to suffer from a variety of mental health issues. The Times reports he was in and out of prison, and lived in various homeless shelters in the city.

A former boyfriend of Charle told the Times that she had “incidents” at the shelter before, and she often asked for a security guard. A city councilmember in New York has also called for increased security at the shelter.
