Pettitte and Riveria too much for Mariners; M’s lose 1-3 to Yankees

imagesSeattle — It was a familiar sight that Mariner fans have disliked since the mid-90s, Yankees starting pitcher, Andy Pettitte (7.1IP, 6Ks) on the mound.

Today was no different, as Pettitte took the mound in front of over 38,000 fans at Safeco and retired the first 9 Mariner batters he faced and allowed only 3 hits in 7.1 innings. Pettitte threw 85 pitches, with 59 of them being strikes.

In the bottom of the 4th, with 1 out, Michael Morse hit a sacrficice single to center, scoring Jason Bay from 3rd, tying the game at 1 run each.

Top of the 5th, Jayson Nix singles to right and scores former Mariner, Ichiro Suzuki for the go-head run.

Top of the 7th, it’s Jayson Nix again, as he singles to center, scoring Brett Gardner, making it 3-1, New York.

In the bottom of the 9th, down 1 run to 3, Mariners fans got another sight their surely tired of, Mariano Rivera came on for New York, and gave up 1 hit, 1 walk, and struck out 3 Mariners as the Yankees hold on to beat the Mariners, 3-1.

The Mariner’s Felix Hernandez (2.58 ERA, 95Ks, 7-4) takes on the Yankees David Phelps (4.15 ERA, 57Ks, 4-3) as the Mariners look to even up the 4 game series with New York tomorrow at Safeco Field at 1:10 P.M.
