For second time in months, fire rips through Lakewood apartment building

LAKEWOOD - A two-alarm fire ripped through the Eastwood Apartments in Lakewood early Wednesday morning, displacing 20 residents.

Hallie McCurdy, with West Pierce Fire and Rescue, confirmed that no one was injured in the fire, which was reported around 2:30 a.m.

The fire was declared under control an hour later. Six units were destroyed in the fire, but all of units were vacant, officials said. However, at least two family units were damaged by water, and the American Red Cross was on scene to help the displaced apartment residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Eastwood Apartments are located in the 5300 block of Chicago Avenue SW in Lakewood.

Firefighters responded to the same apartments back on January 9th for another fire, in which a mother had to drop her baby from a
second floor window.

This is a developing story which will be updated when new information is available.
