WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will unveil Wednesday a package of gun control proposals that, according to a source, will include universal background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will announce the proposals, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Tuesday.

They will be joined by a group of children who wrote letters to the president in the aftermath of the Dec. 14 shooting rampage by a lone gunman who killed 20 students and six adults at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school, Carney said.

Obama will propose legislative steps he previously has backed, such as a ban on assault weapons, restrictions on high-capacity ammunition magazines and strengthening federal background checks of people attempting to buy guns, according to Carney.

The president also will announce other steps that could include executive actions on his part that don’t require congressional approval, Carney noted.

More specifically, the source — an official familiar with the process — said the president’s proposal will press for a ban on high-capacity magazines with more than 10 rounds, universal background checks and a request that funds be made available to help treat mental illness and provide schools with support to enhance their safety.

The federal government estimates that more than 300 million non-military guns are owned or available for purchase in the United States.

Opponents, led by the powerful National Rifle Association, promise a political fight against gun control measures that they say will violate the constitutional right to bear arms.

Obama talks about others fear mongering. Yet does it himself by flaunting those kids. Now my main issue is the fact that more people are killed from drunk drivers then guns. So why is he not saying we need stronger laws there?

'Patriot' Paranoia is a big problem, but the NRA uses it to promote gun sales and increase their kick back from the gun sales. Also, people should learn the difference between then and than.

paranoid yes that other governments, our government, bad cops drug cartels and outlaws get to have automatic weapons does this mean they are paranoid? The constitution ststes the we must be able to protect ourselves from tyranny from any of these. The bottom line is this the bad propaganda about guns is what has the SCARRY BERRIES paranoid. If they could actually see the tyranny comming from the above mentioned organizations that there is a lot more danger ahead.
Understand Guns arent going anywhere! Paranoia or not!! ITS OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT
Wanna open a HUGE can of worms Try to take citizens guns.

I would love to know why this news channel will not even give "pro-gun" views a chance. Some of the proudest gun owners and biggest enthusiasts live here in the pacific northwest. I can't believe people will give up there rights for the perspective of this news channel…. Davd is right, more people are killed from drunk drivers, more people are also killed from malpractice from doctors then rifles.. Heck, even computers aid child predators in prey on children, is Obama going to ban those? How come our leaders will not focus real problems? Just the problems that media portrays as problems…

Gun laws DO NOT affect criminals. Ban will not stop them from getting one. Not now, not in the future. Let’s also ban gasoline and house hold chemicals because a home made explosive can do much worse. Also vehicles, which are thousand pound projectiles that kill many more a year. Also suicide, oh yeah thats already illegal… That seems to be working well. How about Chicago being anti gun, yet having the highest crime rate. It’s not about gun crime ,but TOTAL violent crime! Then our own government let’s fast & furious happen. Wow. Just wow.
