McEwan Fire burns 232 acres, 85% contained in Shelton

MASON COUNTY, Wash. - The Mason County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) reduced evacuation orders to Level 1 (Be Ready) this week after a fire broke out near a Shelton neighborhood on July 4th. 

The brush fire threatened "many homes in the area" of McEwan Prairie Road. McEwan Prarie Road has since reopened, but crews are still using the road to access the fire. Crews ask that residents drive slowly through the area and watch out for emergency vehicles and working crews.

The fire burned about 232 acres by 8 a.m. Tuesday, and is 85% contained.

Central Mason Fire and EMS officials said there is a temporary flight restriction in place over the fire. Mason County also still has a complete burn ban in effect.

The Western Washington Type 3 Incident Management Team plans to hand over command of fire fighting efforts to a local team with the state Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday.

Those displaced by the fires can go to Olympic Middle School (800 E. K Street). The Red Cross was providing shelter.

The Ridge Motorsports Park and Shelton Family YMCA was offering spaces and places for our displaced community members.  The Ridge Motorsports Park (1060 West Eells Hill Rd) is currently open as an evacuation site for dry camping and RV parking. Overnight security is in place to support community members upon arrival.

The Shelton Family YMCA was also open as an evacuation shelter. They have bathrooms, showers, a KidZone space, and a large gymnasium. (3101 N Shelton Springs Rd)
