Federal Way mom accused of pouring gas on daughter, threatening to light her on fire for bad grade

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- A 44-year-old mother is accused of dousing her teen daughter in gasoline and threatening to light her on fire because of what the victim said was a bad test grade.

According to charging documents obtained by Q13 News, the woman also reportedly struck the 14-year-old girl with a tire jack and whipped her with a phone charger cord before the teen ran away to seek help from neighbors.

Lisa Kyles was charged Nov. 16 with attempted first-degree assault and felony harassment, both with domestic violence qualifiers. She pleaded not guilty Tuesday in King County Superior Court.

Detective Richard Kim says Federal Way police were called to an apartment complex Nov. 10 on reports that a mother threatened to light her daughter on fire with gasoline before taking off in a van.

According to the charging documents:

"In this case, the defendant repeatedly beat her 14 y.o. daughter with a tire iron, her fists, a phone charges, some jumper cables, and then poured gasoline on her and her clothes and held a lighter up to her and flicked it, coming very close to her clothing."

The girl was able to escape from the van and run for help. She was taken to St. Francis Hospital for treatment before Child Protective Services took custody of her.

Witnesses said the defendant told them "It's my daughter and I can discipline her however I want" and "I can do as I please."

She is being held on $150,000 bail in the King County Jail.
