Assistant soccer coach in Olympia presumed drowned in Idaho, sheriff's office says

RIGGINS, Idaho -- The Idaho County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that a missing 26-year-old Washington man is presumed drowned after he tried to swim across the Salmon River and got swept away on Sunday.

"While attempting to swim across the Salmon River near French Creek, Austin K. Kelley, 26, was caught by the current and pulled under.  The victim was not wearing a life jacket and his friends attempted to rescue him but were unsuccessful," the sheriff's office said in a news release Wednesday, with the headline, "Tumwater, WA, man presumed drowned."

Riggins, Idaho, is about 150 miles north of Boise.

The sheriff's office said the search for the man was continuing.

The Olympian newspaper said Kelley, 26, lived in Olympia and is an assistant coach for the boys' soccer team at Olympia High School. He also attended Olympia High School. A "Bring Austin Home" vigil for Kelly was to be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Olympia High's Ingersoll Stadium.

Kelley is a civil engineer who works for the Olympia office of HDR Inc. Kelley is married and has an infant, the newspaper said.
