2 girls seriously injured while walking to school in Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Tacoma police say two girls were seriously injured Friday morning when they were hit by a car while crossing a street on their way to school.

The News Tribune newspaper reports the principal of Mason Middle School sent a message home to parents saying the girls' injuries were serious but not life-threatening.

Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool says they are still investigating what happened when the car driven by a 32-year-old man hit the girls.

Principal Patrice Sulkosky says the girls were waiting to cross a street when a driver in one lane stopped for them and motioned them to cross. She says the driver in the second lane did not stop.
