Police shoot knife-wielding hostage taker at Tumwater fast-food restaurant

TUMWATER, Wash. -- Police have shot and wounded a man accused of taking hostages Tuesday at a fast food restaurant in Tumwater.

The Thurston County sheriff's office says police and sheriff's deputies arrived at the Jack In The Box restaurant around 4:30 p.m. after getting calls about a man with a knife.

Police said the suspect held one employee hostage with a knife to the throat. When officers arrived, they attempted to negotiate with the suspect. The hostage apparently broke free, and that's when police entered the restaurant firing three shots.

The man, described as a white males in his 50s, has been transported to Harborview Medical Center with unknown injuries.

Three employees were at the restaurant at the time, and one of the hostages suffered minor defensive injuries.

Two officers were involved in the shooting and will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure, while the Thurston County Critical Incident Team investigates, authorities said.

Detectives said further information would be released Wednesday.
