Bridge collapses amid heavy rains in California

LOS ANGELES -- An elevated section of Interstate 10 has collapsed amid heavy rains in a remote desert area of California, cutting off traffic between California and Arizona and leaving a driver injured.

The California Highway Patrol says a bridge that carries eastbound I-10 across a wash about 50 miles west of the Arizona state line washed away early Sunday evening, forcing them to turn around traffic headed toward Arizona.

The westbound side of the freeway remained intact, but traffic was being stopped while it was checked.

KTLA reports a 30 by 50 foot section of the eastbound interstate "is washed away and the bridge is gone."

A truck crashed in the collapse, leaving the driver partially trapped, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Images showed the vehicle attached to a a towing cable dangling over the edge of the collapsed road.

The Riverside County Fire Department said it had to extract a driver who crashed in the collapse. The person was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries.
