Wildfire puts residents on alert in south Puyallup area

PUYALLUP, Wash. -- Firefighters were able to contain, but not fully control a wildfire in an area south of Puyallup Monday night. Officials said they would monitor it overnight and try to put it out at first light Tuesday.

The fire was first reported Monday afternoon behind Lipoma Firs Golf Course in Puyallup.

Officials initially said some residents were evacuated in the area of 132nd Ave E and 200th Street E.  But later, around 9 p.m., Central Pierce officials said homes were on notice to be ready if evacuations became necessary.

Crews said the fire was difficult to fight because it was in a heavily wooded area.

There were at least 11 fire engines at the scene late Monday. It had burned 20 acres, according to Central Pierce Fire & Rescue.

The public was asked to avoid traveling on 200th Street near the Orting-Kapowsin Highway, and anywhere around Emerald Ridge High School.
