14-year-old boy swimming with family drowns in river

ELMA -- A 14-year-old boy swimming with his three brothers drowned Monday evening in the Chehalis River.

Fire rescue crews received calls at 5:12 p.m. of a swimmer in distress in the Chehalis River near the 10000 block of South Bank Road outside of Elma.

The victim, identified as a a 14-year-old boy who lived in the area, was swimming with three brothers when he became distressed and went under the water. The brothers tried to save the boy, sheriff's deputies said, but could not reach him.

The boys called out to their mother, who immediately called 911. Aid personnel could not immediately locate the victim in the river.

The boy's body was found later that evening underwater, deputies said.
