Firefighters in central Oregon responding to small fires

RAINBOW, Ore. (AP) — Firefighters in central Oregon are responding to numerous, mostly small fires caused by a lightning storm.

The U.S. Forest Service on Saturday said approximately 20 fires were reported at various locations throughout the forest. Most of the fires are either a single burning tree or are less than half of an acre in size.

The most visible fire is west of Bend, on the north side of Highway 126 just across from the McKenzie River Ranger District in Rainbow.

Another is on the east arm of Cougar Reservoir; the nearby boat ramp at Echo remains open.

A helicopter is flying over the reported fires to assess conditions and plan the appropriate response.

More lightning is expected which could start up new fires.
