U.S. Open bringing business boost to region

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. -- Local businesses are benefiting from the U.S. Open, and analysts say the economic ripple effect of the event will be felt for months.

Tom Ebner, with the Hotel Murano, said, "We haven’t seen the likes of these types of events in the Tacoma area ... I’ve been here 20 years. I haven’t seen this. It’s been fantastic. Everyone is pumped for it."

Ebner said the hotel is almost at capacity for the entire week with spectators, organizers and golfers.

All those people need rides throughout the Puget Sound and that is fueling business for shuttle companies. Plus, they are bringing business to local restaurants.

Roshaun Yates runs Lifestyles Valet. Yates said, "It’s been great. I would say about 300% growth this year."

You don't have to own a business to cash in. Linda Sweigart rented out her 2,100-square-foot home for the week of the championship for $14,000.

Sweigart said, "It was crazy. I think I got really lucky, though, because I know a lot of people are still looking to rent their places and they haven’t gotten rented."

Economic analysts say that after the event, tourists will come to the Pacific Northwest from all over the world and inject more money into the economy.
