Navy pilot safely ejects when trainer goes off runway and into San Diego Bay

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Navy says a pilot safely ejected into San Diego Bay from a training aircraft that went off the end of a runway at Naval Air Station North Island Friday.

The Navy said boaters rescued the pilot from the bay that separates the Navy base from downtown San Diego.

The Navy says the pilot was being evaluated at a hospital.

The pilot was on a routine training flight in preparation for qualifying to land on aircraft carriers, the Navy said. The plane was attempting to land when it ran off the end of runway 29 at about 2 p.m., Lt. Reagan Lauritzen told FOX 5 in San Diego.
