Bill allowing kids to use sunscreen in schools passes Oregon House

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon House has unanimously passed legislation allowing students to use sunscreen and sun-protective clothing during school hours and at school events.

Proponents said Oregon schools allow only specific over-the-counter drugs on their campuses, and sunscreen is not on that list.

They say because sunscreen contains several active ingredients, it is considered an over-the-counter drug by federal officials.

According to testimony at a hearing, the issue came to light when someone wanted to donate sunscreen to a high school event, and school administrators declined the gift.

Rep. Alissa Keny-Guyer of Portland noted Wednesday that Oregon has the fifth highest rate of melanoma in the country.

The bill now goes to the Senate.
