Overweight Tumwater man drops 85 pounds to enlist in Army

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Jeremy Phillips played football and competed in track at Black Hills High School in Tumwater where he graduated in 2012. But his weight had reached 300 pounds last year when he tried to enlist in the Army, and the Army said no, no, no.

The 21-year-old was rejected three times because of his weight.

The Olympian reports  soldiers from the Armed Forces Recruiting Center in Lacey worked out with Phillips to help him burn calories.

The 5-foot-11 Phillips worked off 85 pounds and he finally passed the physical last week on the fourth try. He's counting on losing 25 more pounds in basic training.
