What's the best way to fight the flu?

BELLEVUE -- Everyone is trying to stay healthy and avoid the flu this year, but some are already dealing with scratchy throats, colds, and fevers.

"A lot of people come in hoping I can give them a pill so they are all better," Dr. Pernille Ottosen said Friday.

The day after Christmas, Ottosen treated several patients at Immediate Clinic in Bellevue. For those who get sick, she said, the first 48 hours are critical because people can be prescribed Tamiflu.

"It's really important to get on it right away first or second day or it doesn't work as well on the third or fourth day," said Ottosen.

Despite concerns over the effectiveness of this year’s flu shot, doctors say the vaccine is still the best way to stay healthy. The shot is recommended for all people six months and older.

To avoid spreading germs, experts say cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Also wash your hands often.

If you do get sick, stay home from work and school until at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.
