Thieves break into Sumner home, family sleeps through the burglary

SUMNER -- Todd O’Day calls the people who broke into his home early Sunday morning “very brazen.”

He thinks they got in through a side door, broke into his garage, and then made their way into his kitchen. He and his 14-year-old daughter had fallen asleep on the couch nearby. That didn’t stop the thieves from rifling through his wife’s purse.

“It’s different when I think I was four feet from where they were,” he says. “They had to literally almost lean over me.”

The TV was still on, which is why O’Day thinks he and his daughter didn’t hear anything. It wasn’t until the next morning that he realized what had happened.

“I started looking around, and noticed wallets and purses were gone. Electronics were missing, and my car had been taken.”

Some other cars in the neighborhood were also broken into, as was Dale Hardman’s shed.

“It’s very upsetting that someone’s gotten into your space,” says Hardman. “It makes you uneasy.”

O’Day’s kids have also been uneasy since the break-in.

“They’re having a hard time sleeping. I had to pick up my daughter from school the other day, because she was crying a lot.”

He thinks they’ll all feel better if the thieves are caught. But in the meantime, he’s doing what he can to help them feel safe in their home again.

“I’ve secured the garage doors, put new locks on the house, we’ve taken some measures.”

The O’Days are hoping their black Mitsubishi Galant will turn up, and that will give police some clues. They do know that the thieves tried to use their ATM cards at a nearby Chase bank right after the break in, but they don’t know if they were caught on camera.
