HARROWING ESCAPE: Massive apartment fire traps residents, forces some to jump from third story

KENT, Wash. -- Residents had to jump to safety from their third story window as a massive fire burned through a Kent apartment building early Friday morning at the Mosaic Hills Apartments in the 237000 block of 108th Avenue SE.

Firefighters say ambulances had to transport two victims to the hospital who suffered injuries while jumping to safety.

Kent Fire department spokesman Don Barbarie told Q13 FOX News that the fire broke out just after 2 a.m. and that when firefighters arrived on scene they saw flames and smoke coming from one of the apartment buildings. The fire response quickly went to a second, and then a third-alarm, as more fire crews were called in.

Fire fighters say neighbors evacuated everyone who lived inside the building that caught fire. Neighbors say the building had 18 units and dozens of people living inside.

Fire fighters say no one else was hurt in the fire and everyone was accounted for. The Red Cross was on scene to help nearly 30 residents who are displaced because of the fire.

Ruby Wade said she tried to wake her family and get them to safety but the smoke was too much to handle.

“She opened her door and smoke just came pouring out. I opened my door trying to go in there because I knew my son and daughter was in there and I went trying to get them and I couldn't get them so I had to run back downstairs to call them from the window to wake them up to come out," Wade said.

Wade says her family did make it out in time as the fire continued to grow. Fire fighters don't know how the fire started.

Investigators are on the scene to find out the cause.
