Police: Woman killed by Amtrak train didn't look up as whistle blew

TACOMA -- A woman who was struck and killed Thursday by an Amtrak train did not move off the tracks when the conductor blew the warning whistle, police said.

According to Loretta Cool of the Tacoma Police Department, a woman was hit Thursday morning near the intersection of 11th Street and Dock Street in Tacoma around 8:20 a.m.

The woman was walking down the track when the train was coming. Cool said the train blew its whistle several times but the victim didn't raise her head and did not move out of the way.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A BNSF spokesperson said the woman was trespassing on rail property.

Tacoma police are investigating the incident.

This is the 2nd person struck on a BNSF train track in the last week, as another person was hit Saturday in Mt. Vernon.
