Sex offender who fled Canada is in Seattle, officials say

SEATTLE –- A sex offender who cut off his GPS bracelet in Canada and fled that country into Washington state is now in Seattle, corrections officials say.
Officials in Alberta, Canada, alerted U.S. authorities about 48-year-old Michael Stanley after he cut off his monitoring bracelet and crossed the border Oct. 7.
On Saturday, Canadian law enforcement officials announced they were not interested in extraditing Stanley.
A source who knows Stanley said Tuesday he’s staying in Seattle and should be considered dangerous.
Earlier this week, detectives in Federal Way started investigating whether Stanley could be a suspect in an attempted luring incident involving an 8-year-old girl. On Tuesday, Federal Way police said Stanley crossed the border into Washington state two days after the Federal Way incident, thereby eliminating him as a suspect.
Stanley, who is an American citizen, has a criminal history in both countries, but is not wanted for any crime in the United States. Canadian officials classify him as a repeat sex offender, considered a high risk to re-offend.
The Department of Corrections Northwest Community Response Unit confirmed Tuesday that they are monitoring the situation, but noted that Stanley has not been accused of any crime here in the U.S. and therefore is not subject to arrest.
