PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. -- A man died by suicide after troopers say he led them on a high-speed chase Thursday in Pierce County.

According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, troopers tried to pull over a speeding black Ford F-150 just before 9:00 p.m. Thursday on SR 16 in Kitsap County. State patrol troopers and Kitsap County deputies pursued the truck into Pierce County where the driver crashed and rolled into an embankment on SR 302 near Gig Harbor.

Police said they heard a gunshot from inside the truck and troopers returned fire. The suspect, a 35-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical examiner on Friday said the driver had died by suicide.

No troopers or law enforcement were hurt.
