Thurston County deputy shoots, kills suspect who went after him with knife

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Detectives are investigating after they say a deputy shot and killed a man who tried to attack him with a knife.

An official with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office said it happened in the 7800 block of Mountain Aire Drive SE.

The official said the residents of a home called 911 to report a man they had a protection order against had shown up. The first deputy that arrived confronted the man and the deputy used his stun gun. The suspect then came at the deputy with a knife, and that's when the deputy opened fire, the official said.

The deputy who fired the fatal shot was not injured, and the Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team is handling the case.

The deputy is being placed on administrative leave which is standard procedure. He is a 6-year veteran of law enforcement.

Roads in the area would be closed for several hours during the investigation.
