Man fatally shot by Poulsbo police at fireworks show ID'd

POULSBO, Wash. — The Kitsap County Coroner's Office has identified 39-year-old Stonechild Chiefstick as the man Poulsbo police shot and killed last week at a community fireworks show.

Kitsap County Sheriff's Lt. Jon VanGesen says Chiefstick died from gunshot wounds to his head and torso.

The Seattle Times reports that police say Chiefstick was armed with a flat-headed screwdriver, which was recovered.

Investigators say as a large crowd gathered at Waterfront Park Wednesday awaiting the start of fireworks, people told officers that a man was acting strangely, alarming the people around him.

Investigators say the witnesses pointed the man out to officers, who approached him. Police say a struggle ensued and one officer fired at the man, who died from his injuries.

The details of what happened during the struggle and shooting remain under investigation, and the officer's name hasn't been released.
