Man dies after police shooting at Poulsbo fireworks show

POULSBO, Wash. -- A man shot by Poulsbo Police Wednesday as crowds gathered for the town's annual fireworks display has died.

According to a press release from the Pouslbo Police Department, officers responded to Waterfront Park after reports of someone threatening people.

A crowd was gathered at Muriel Iverson Williams Waterfront Park for the annual 3rd of July fireworks show.  Q13 News Assignment Editor Ryan Hodges was in Poulsbo for the display to watch the fireworks and says a man approached him and his friends who seemed out of sorts.

The man had a screwdriver in his pocket, and Hodges says the man lunged at him.  That's when he says his friends went to get a police officer.

" was pacing and one officer said, 'What do you have in your pocket? What's that in your pocket?' pulled out his screwdriver, tried to tackle him, and then he started to run and he's holding his screwdriver," Hodges said.

Hodges says he started to leave the area and heard gunshots.

Police say after they confronted the man, a struggle ensued. During the struggle one officer fired his handgun, hitting the man. He died from his injuries.

The officer who shot the man has been with the department for 5 years, police said in a release. Investigators with the Kitsap County Incident Response Team are now investigating the shooting.

Police say the Kitsap County Coroner will release the man's identity pending an autopsy. That is expected to happen in the next couple of days, according to a release.
