Child escapes serious injury after cougar attack in Leavenworth

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. -- A young child in Leavenworth escaped serious injury after a cougar attack, according to Washington State Patrol.

The attack happened in the Enchantment Park area around dusk Saturday, Trooper Jeremy Weber said.

Authorities said the cougar was spotted in the park earlier in the day and was said to be "displaying abnormal behavior." That night, the cougar attacked a child who suffered only minor injuries.

Fish and Wildlife officers and K9 units searched for the animal and captured it around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The cougar was euthanized.

WDFW biologists examined the animal and say it appeared to be healthy, but they're planning additional testing to see what may have caused it to become aggressive.

The child was okay and recovering.
