Officer driving through red light hits, injures motorist

FERNDALE, Wash. — Authorities say a 64-year-old woman was hospitalized after an officer in an unmarked police SUV drove through a red light and hit her vehicle near Bellingham.

The Bellingham Herald reports Teresa Thompson was turning left through an intersection when she was struck by an officer driving a Ferndale patrol car Thursday, according to the Washington State Patrol. The agency says Thompson was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and was in serious condition in the intensive care unit Friday.

Ferndale police say Ferndale Police Lt. Bill Hatchett had just turned on his lights to head to a 911 call when he hit Thompson. Hatchett suffered minor injuries. The state patrol says no charges are expected.

Once an investigation is complete, an internal review of the officer's course of action will be done.
