Jury convicts Washington state man of girlfriend's killing

OLYMPIA, Wash. — A Washington state man has been convicted of the shooting death of his girlfriend in a fast-track trial.

The Olympian reports that a superior court jury in Olympia has convicted 34-year-old Matthew J. McCollian of second-degree murder, felony possession of a firearm and arson.

The jury heard the case 60 days after arraignment when McCollian asserted his right to a speedy trial.

Authorities say 24-year-old Sophia Stutzman was found dead Dec. 12 about 62 miles south of Seattle with a gunshot wound to her chest.

Authorities say Stutzman was shot in a vehicle on Interstate 5 and McCollian disposed of her body and burned the rental car.

Court documents indicate the pair was dating and Stutzman's mother told police she dropped her off at McCollian's apartment Dec. 11.
