CWU Ellensburg campus secure after active shooter report

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Police say all buildings have been secured on the Central Washington University campus in Ellensburg after a report of an active shooter.

The university said in a release that there was a report of a shooter in the area of Lind Hall at 5:23 p.m. on Wednesday.  The report was determined to be a false alarm, and university police said at about 7:10 p.m. that all buildings had been secured and that the campus was safe.

"I am greatly relieved the report was not true and I would like to thank our campus police department for their efforts to search and secure all the affected campus buildings and to ensure the safety of our students, staff and faculty,"CWU President James L Gaudino said in a release.

Students on campus had been asked to remain in place while police searched buildings.

"I was freaking out, I felt like anxiety like I never felt before and I just didn’t know what was gonna happen," said student Ethan Carpenter-Sustek. "Because all of a sudden we look out the window and there are cop cars piling up."

Gaudino said police are continuing to investigate the report and that the campus will be open Thursday.
