Man in custody after I-5 standoff

LAKEWOOD, Wash. -- Authorities say Interstate 5 has partially reopened near Lakewood after a vehicle crash and the arrest of a man who had refused to surrender to police.

The Washington Department of Transportation said Tuesday evening that two lanes of northbound Interstate 5 had reopened near Gravelly Lake Drive while one southbound lane had reopened.

Police say the SUV that the suspect was in was driving at more than 100 miles per hour at times. The vehicle eventually slammed into a semi-truck, destroying a barrier and overhead light.

Following the chase and crash, the suspect got of the vehicle with a knife and a stand-off followed.

Police say the man was taken into custody at about 5:20 p.m. and that the truck driver was OK.

Headlights stretched for miles down I-5 as the incident backed up traffic.  WSDOT officials could not start working until police cleared the scene.

Crews had to tow both vehicles as well as cut power to the overhead lights.

Southbound lanes were initially blocked at Gravelly Lake Drive around 4:00 p.m. The northbound lanes were closed a short time later.

Multiple Washington State Patrol vehicles were at the scene before WSDOT cut off the camera feed.
