Deputy shoots, kills suspect inside Kent Station parking garage

KENT, Wash. -- A King County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man inside the Kent Station parking garage Thursday morning, authorities said.

The veteran transit deputy spotted a stolen car in the parking garage just before 9 a.m. When the deputy approached, the driver of the stolen car grabbed an AR-15 rifle and pointed it at the deputy.

That's when the deputy opened fired hitting the suspect, the sheriff's office said.

"The driver reached for a rifle, the deputy fired at least one shot striking the driver," said Sgt. Ryan Abbott with the King County Sheriff's Office. "First aid was applied here, medics were also on scene."

The 18-year-old suspected driver was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

Police said a second suspect, a passenger inside the stolen vehicle, fled on foot. A third suspect associated with the stolen vehicle also ran from the scene. The 22-year-old passenger and the 18-year-old third suspect were both arrested by Kent Police a short time later.

The shooting happened right next to the busy Kent Station shopping center and less than a week after another Kent Police officer was killed during a pursuit.

Deputies were able to finish investigating the crime scene and the parking garage was re-opened to the public prior to the Thursday evening commute.

The deputy is a 28-year veteran with the sheriff's office. He was placed on administrative leave following an investigation.
