17-year-old boy killed in fiery crash on SR 99 in south Seattle

SEATTLE -- State Route 99 in south Seattle was shut down in both directions Thursday night into Friday morning after a one-car crash knocked an overhead sign onto the highway, the Washington State Patrol said.

A 17-year-old boy was killed in the crash which happened on northbound SR 99 just south of Cloverdale Street in south Seattle.

Washington State Patrol troopers said speed was a factor in the crash that killed the driver, who was the only person inside the car.

The car hit one of the poles supporting an overhead sign that came crashing down while the car burst into flames. Debris was scattered across the highway.

Troopers said it did not appear that the driver was racing another car. Nobody else was hurt.

Southbound lanes of SR 99 reopened early Friday morning and northbound opened around 8:30 a.m.
