King County Jail officer shoots murder suspect who escaped Seattle hospital



SEATTLE – A member of the King County Jail staff shot a murder suspect in downtown Seattle on Wednesday morning, police said.

The suspect was Giovanni Herrin, a 19-year-old Federal Way man who stands accused of shooting and killing 17-year-old Karyme Barreto-Sabalza on a trail in Salt Air Vista Park in Kent last month.

Seattle police said no officers were hurt in the shooting at 8th and Yesler. Herrin was shot in the shoulder and is expected to survive.

Police said Herrin was under supervision at Harborview Medical Center, but escaped and was shot. He was then sent back to Harborview for emergency care.

Seattle police are doing the preliminary investigation, while King County Jail staff will conduct their own internal investigation.
