1 dead in wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 in Marysville; driver arrested for DUI



MARYSVILLE, Wash. -- One person is dead following a wrong-way driver's joy ride on Interstate 5 in Marysville. The causing driver is under arrest, according to police.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman said a driver in a 1991 Ford Explorer got on I-5 at 116th Street going the wrong way just after 4 p.m. Sunday.

The 56-year-old driver then caused four crashes as he headed northbound in the southbound lanes.

WSP said one person died when the Ford collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla, just south of Highway 530.

That person has been identified as Miriam, Robinson, 28, from Albany, Oregon. She was the passenger in the Corolla. The driver of the Corolla and an additional passenger were injured and taken to the hospital.

Three other cars were struck by debris.

The wrong-way driver was booked into the Snohomish County jail for suspicious of DUI.

TRAFFIC UPDATE

All southbound lanes of I-5 near Highway 530 were reopened about 8 p.m.

At one point backups stretched 4 miles on southbound I-5 and 3 miles on southbound State Route 9 north of Arlington.
