Ex-worker guilty of attempted rape of disabled woman at center

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A former supervisor at a state-run center for people with developmental disabilities has been found guilty of trying to rape a client.

A jury in Pierce County Superior Court found 62-year-old Terry Shepard guilty of second-degree attempted rape and indecent liberties on Wednesday.

Shepard was accused of having sex with a 57-year-old developmentally disabled woman inside the facility in Buckley. The family also filed a $10 million lawsuit against the State Department of Social and Health Services.

He was arrested in late 2016 after a co-worker witnessed the alleged incident and notified school officials and law enforcement.

The school, run by the state Department of Social and Health Services, is home to about 320 adults.

Shepard faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced July 27.
