King County sheriff's deputy arrested after 13-hour standoff with Seattle police

SEATTLE -- A domestic violence suspect surrendered peacefully Wednesday after a 13-hour standoff with Seattle police. The suspect who has been identified as an off-duty King County sheriff's deputy was taken into custody shortly after 3 p.m.

Seattle police said that at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, a man walked into the East Precinct and said his boyfriend, a King County sheriff's deputy, had assaulted him at their apartment in the 1500 block of Belmont Avenue in Seattle.

Police officers went to the apartment and found the suspect had barricaded himself inside, police said. He refused to open the door and then sprayed pepper-spray underneath the door, forcing the officers to withdraw, Seattle police said.

The building was cordoned off and both SWAT and a hostage negotiation team were called to the scene.

Negotiators talked to the suspect for over 12 hours, finally convincing him to surrender, police said.

The deputy was arrested and booked into the King County Jail for investigation of assault.

The deputy has been with the sheriff's office for two and a half years but he had recently been placed on paid administrative leave, King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ryan Abbott said. It's unclear what caused him to be placed on leave.
