Grant County deputy who accidently shot wife returns to work

EPHRATA, Wash. -- Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones has announced that a deputy who accidentally shot his wife over the summer has been cleared to return to work.

The Columbia Basin Herald reported Tuesday that Jose Rivera previously entered a guilty plea to one count of reckless endangerment in connection with the August 2017 accidental shooting of his wife, Sydney Rivera.

Rivera was sentenced to a total of 364 days in jail, with 356 days suspended and the remaining eight days converted to 48 hours of community service. He was also ordered to deliver 15 public presentations on gun safety.

Sydney Rivera survived after going through multiple surgeries. She cooperated with investigators and stated several times there was no malicious intent.

Rivera was on paid administrative leave during court proceedings.
