Should state add ‘gender X’ as option on birth certificates?

SEATTLE — A change could be coming to birth certificates in the state of Washington.

Next year, a third option may be available beyond just ‘male’ or ‘female.’ The third option would be gender ‘X’.

It doesn’t come without controversy.

But as Jon Humbert found out at a state Department of Health’s hearing on the proposal Tuesday, it’s about more than just about a name — lives could be at stake.
