Two men arrested for allegedly opening fire at State Patrol trooper in Grandview

YAKIMA, Wash. — The Washington State Patrol announced Thursday night it has arrested two men believed to be responsible for opening fire on a trooper on Monday.

One is an 18-year-old Mabton resident, and the other is a 39-year-old Grandview resident.

The wo men have been booked into the Yakima County Jail for assault and unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and violation of the Controlled Substances Act.

The men were arrested Thursday morning in Adams County without incident, the State Patrol said.

The incident began Monday when a State Patrol trooper tried to pull them over for speeding. The trooper pursued the vehicle for six minutes before it stopped at a home in Grandview, southeast of Yakima, at about 9 p.m. Monday, said Trooper Chris Thorson, a patrol spokesman.

The men got out of the car and started shooting at the trooper, whose cruiser was stopped about 50 feet away, he said. Thorson released a photo of the cruiser Tuesday showing three bullet holes in the passenger side of the windshield, and two more apparent bullet marks on the body of the police car.

The trooper got behind his car and returned fire but was not injured, he said.
