Tree hits hikers at Twin Falls State Park, injures toddler and 2 adults

NORTH BEND, Wash.  — Three people, including a toddler, were injured after a tree fell on a group of hikers at Twin Falls State Park in North Bend, Washington.

King County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sergeant Cindi West says a 100-foot cedar tree fell on a group of hikers and another woman Sunday morning.

A man, his 16-month-old son and another woman on the trail were hit by the tree.

West says the toddler was flown to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. He has now been updated to serious.

The two adults were taken away by an ambulance in serious condition.

West says the tree caused a rock slide on the trail, but no word on what caused the tree to come down.

West says it's an "absolute miracle" the outcome wasn't worse because of how many hikers were on the trail Sunday morning. Adding that the fact that so many hikers were on the trail actually saved the victims from having critical injuries.

"Good Samaritans actually grabbed the baby from the father and ran it to the trailhead."

The trail was closed briefly while crews worked to remove the tree.
