Seattle police: Officers shoot, kill knife-wielding woman

SEATTLE -- Seattle police say officers responding to a burglary call at an apartment shot and killed a 30-year-old woman who was armed with a knife.

Detectives say Charleena Lyles, 30, called them Sunday morning to report a burglary at her home near Magnuson Park.

Investigators say two officers responded because Lyles has a history of concerning behavior.

As two officers responded to the woman's fourth-floor apartment near Magnuson Park in northeast Seattle, police say she came at the officers with a knife. The woman was hit multiple times and died just inside the apartment.

No officers were injured.

Early Monday morning, SPD released audio of the confrontation as recorded by dashcam.

Lyles' family says she had been arrested several times before and police had even been called to the home in the past.

"Why couldn't they have Tased her? They could have taken her down. I could have taken her down," Monika Williams, the dead woman's sister, said.

Investigators say officers both fired. They started life-saving procedures but were not successful.

Per department policy, both officers have been placed on administrative leave.
