Police shoot knife-wielding man in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Police shot and killed a knife-wielding suspect Sunday afternoon in downtown Bellingham.

Authorities say the man had stabbed another man in the neck across the street from the Horseshoe Cafe, 113 E Holly Street.

Police say witnesses called 911 after the stabbing, then followed the suspect telling emergency dispatchers where he was going.

Officers saw the man in the 200 block of Magnolia Street, still armed with a knife. Police say he refused to drop it, prompting an officer to open fired.

The man died at the scene.

At a new conference, Bellingham police Lt. Danette Beckley didn't give the condition of the man who had been stabbed.

Whatcom County Sheriff's Department will investigate the officer-involved shooting.
