Dozens of schools closed, thousands without power as winter storm wallops Western Washington

SEATTLE -- Snow day!

A winter storm has left snow totals of an inch to more than a foot across western Washington, causing widespread school closures and power outages Monday.

The closures include Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett public schools. Click here for the full list.

Q13 meteorologist M.J. McDermott says the snow will continue into Monday before turning to rain for many areas by the afternoon.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for the greater Puget Sound Metro area.

Roads were slushy or snow-covered for almost everyone. Q13 traffic expert Adam Gehrke says dozens of spinouts were reported by 6 a.m.

Fallen trees and downed power lines blocked roads and caused power outages across the region.

As of 2:30 p.m., Puget Sound Energy reported about 80,000 customers without power. Seattle City Light had about 5,000. Snohomish County PUD reported 4,700 earlier in the day. (Check the latest outage numbers here)

Meanwhile, the Cascade Mountains could see 30 inches of snow through Monday afternoon. People were advised to only travel over Snoqualmie and White passes in an emergency.

Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass was closed both directions until about 2 p.m.

Sea-Tac Airport said runways and taxiways remained open Monday -- about 4 inches of snow had fallen. Airport officials said there had been about 150 cancellations as of 9 a.m.
