I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass opens in both directions; US 2 reopens after brief closure

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. -- After being closed for more than 36 hours, Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass opened to eastbound traffic around 4 p.m. Thursday and to westbound traffic at 6 p.m.

Traction tires are required over the pass.

Eastbound lanes of Snoqualmie Pass were reopened after dozens of downed trees and other debris were cleared from the roadway.

"Conditions on I-90 have improved enough to allow our maintenance crews to start clean-up efforts," WSDOT officials said earlier in the day. "This includes clearing dozens of trees that fell onto Eastbound lanes as well as clearing ice, snow and other debris."

WSDOT said it knows the closure is a headache for truckers but the nasty winter weather has turned Snoqualmie Pass into an ice rink.

“Anytime you close down a major corridor it’s going to have a major impact on everyone,” said Justin Fujioka with WSDOT.

US 2 briefly closed in both directions just west of Leavenworth Thursday, joining I-90 as a major Washington pass that closed due to weather.

The Washington State Department of Transportation announced around 3 p.m. that US 2 was closed from Coles Corner at milepost 85 to Leavenworth at milepost 99 due to multiple snow slides.

A short time later, the roadway reopened.
