Interview: Governor defends proposed taxes in new budget plan

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Gov. Jay Inslee has unveiled his new state budget that includes $4.4 billion in new taxes to help fund K-12 public education.

The governor’s budget also includes $300 million to fix our state’s struggling mental health system.

He proposes to raise the money through increases to the Business & Occupational tax on services, a new carbon tax, and a new 7.9% tax on capital gains above $25,000 for an individual and $50,000 for couples.

Already, some Senate Republicans are calling it the biggest tax hike in state history.
