Wilson, Seahawks struggle early and often in 38-10 loss to Green Bay Packers

GREEN BAY, Wis. – To say Russell Wilson didn’t look like himself Sunday would be an understatement.

Wilson threw five interceptions and went 22-for-39 in the Seahawks 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

Before Sunday, Wilson had never thrown five picks in a regular season game. In fact, the only time he threw four interceptions in a game was Jan. 18, 2015 against the Green Bay Packers in the fabled NFC Championship game.

Twenty-eight points was also the Seahawks' biggest margin of loss with Wilson at quarterback.

Yet to lay the blame completely at Wilson’s feet would not be fair. The team’s road woes continued early, often and across the board.

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers connected with wide receiver Davante Adams on the third play of the game for a 75-yard touchdown. The Seahawks answered with a 28-yard field goal from Steven Hauschka, but it was all Packers from that point forward. Rodgers hit Jordy Nelson late in the second quarter, and again in the third quarter to put the Packers up 28-3 with 4:24 left in the quarter. Rodgers finished with 246 yards and three touchdowns.

Wilson did connect with Tanner McEvoy for a touchdown with 8:21 left to go in the game. But the Seahawks' first road touchdown since last month in New England was too little, too late.

Rodgers and company diced up the typically strong Seahawks secondary, and the Hawks clearly missed safety Early Thomas, who is out for the season with a broken leg. Rodgers had plenty of time in the pocket, too, with the Seahawks not recording a sack until the last play of the third quarter. It was the Hawks' first sack in almost three games.

Sunday marked the first time the Seahawks defense gave up three or more touchdowns this season to an opposing offense.

Not many bright spots could be found in any facet of the Hawks game. Drop passes were abound, leading to at least one of the five interceptions. Thomas Rawls led the Hawks rushing attack with 67 yards. Wilson was pressured throughout the day, and sacked three times.

The outcome was secured so early, Green Bay backup quarterback Brett Hundley came into the game with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks had hoped to piggyback off a 40-7 drumming of the Carolina Panthers last week. However, the game did little to answer many of the lingering questions. Can the offensive line hold up? Will the Hawks secondary still dominate without Earl Thomas? And will Wilson, who suffered ankle and knee injuries earlier this year, totally return to his usual self.

The Hawks look to answer these questions and more next week against the Los Angeles Rams. The game will be at at 5:25 p.m. Sunday at CenturyLink Field.
