Nordstrom is selling this leather-wrapped rock for $85. No joke

SEATTLE -- This is the story of a rock. A rock wrapped in leather and sold for $85 at Nordstrom.

The "Medium Leather Wrapped Stone" has suddenly become an internet joke. It's been on sale all year, but last week several Twitter users discovered the unusual gift during their holiday shopping.

Here's the item description:

A paperweight? A conversation piece? A work of art? It's up to you, but this smooth Los Angeles-area stone—wrapped in rich, vegetable-tanned American leather secured by sturdy contrast whipstitching—is sure to draw attention wherever it rests. A traditional hardening process gives the leather a beautiful ombré effect. Like all Made Solid leather pieces, this one is cut, shaped, sewn and finished by hand in artist Peter Maxwell's Los Angeles studio. Using vintage leatherworking tools and traditional saddle-stitching techniques, Maxwell aims to create beautiful designs that embody both simplicity and functionality, and that develop rich character and patina over time.

The item had some ... interesting reviews too. One reviewer claimed the stone was not "handmade" as advertised in the description. Another demanded instructions about how to "turn it on."

Not to be outdone, the Seattle-based retailer found out about the buzz and began posting photos on Instagram of the stone in various situations.

And apparently the stone was popular enough to sell out. As of Wednesday, Nordstrom's website says the product is not available. Darn.

The good news? The stone apparently comes in a smaller size for $65.

Or you could just go outside, grab a rock and wrap it in something.
