Tacoma Dome getting a $21.3 million facelift beginning next year

TACOMA, Wash. – Tacoma’s primary landmark is about to get prettier.

The Tacoma Dome will get a facelift beginning next summer, after the city approved a $21.3 million package that will go toward exterior beautification, new seating, renovated bathrooms, backstage modernization and upgrades to loading docks and security.

“The revitalization of this legendary venue will not only impact the skyline but also boost community pride,” said city manager T.C. Broadnax.

The announcement came via a press release from the Dome.

“The Tacoma Dome is an icon, a ‘must-play’ venue hosting world-class events for more than 33 years,” said Kim Bedier, the city’s director of venues and events. “We are looking forward to this exciting transformation and setting the stage for the Dome’s continuing legacy as the premier arena for live entertainment in this region.”

The Tacoma Dome was built at a cost of $44 million in 1983.

New siding, paint and signage will be part of the package. Renovations will be completed by the fall of 2018.

“Investing in the infrastructure and long-term future of the Tacoma Dome is vital to the continued growth of arts and tourism in the region,” said mayor Marilyn Strickland. “The sustained economic vitality of the Dome will continue to advance Tacoma’s reputation as a destination.”
