Teen arrested for drive-by shooting; officers find handgun next to toddler in backseat

SEATTLE -- Police say they arrested a 16-year-old boy after a drive-by shooting Tuesday night outside a south Seattle community center.

According to Seattle police, bike patrol officers were working an emphasis near Rainier Ave. S. and S. Henderson St. around 4:30 p.m. when they heard gunshots.

Officers pedaled to the scene near Rainier Beach Community Center and noticed a gray Buick sedan speeding away from the scene.

Police stopped the car near Seward Park Ave. S. and S. Fisher Place and took the teenager into custody.

Officers said they found a handgun in the backseat of the car beside a two-year-old boy who was strapped into a car seat. Custody was given to the child's grandmother.

Police said they also interviewed and released two female passengers, ages 22 and 17.

The boy was booked into the Youth Service Center. Gang Unit detectives are investigating.

Nobody was hurt.
